I am just loving springtime. I don’t know if I have been in a fog for the past 33 years but I feel like I am really “seeing” spring this year for the first time. Its probably because I had been in New York for the past 3 springs and I’m not sure I even saw a tree there. On my drive to Philadelphia University I take the beautiful Kelly Drive which is chock full of dogwoods and cherry trees. It is just so surreal to see a tree with giant fuzzy pink blossoms. I feel like I’m tripping…which isn’t the best thing to feel while driving fast on a curvy road running late for class. At any rate, it is so inspiring! Speaking of inspiring…I had a hot date with my dvr this morning and I watched American Idol: Idol Gives Back. Oh my gosh, I was a total mess. I just sat there for an hour whimpering and sobbing like a baby. I love Annie Lennox and Carrie Underwood, who I don’t normally love, but she gave a truly amazing performance of George Michael’s “Praying For Time”. It really made me think about this world and what a mess it really is. The earth is so out of balance right now. These poor children live in such terrible conditions without clean water or medicine or even parents. Some of them even eat dirt to stay alive. So sad. Meanwhile we have to watch some skanks get breast implants or fake hair or throw a $500,000 16th birthday party or wedding. Something is wacked out in this world. I hope idol can raise a zillion dollars for these kids. On a frivolous note. I am so looking forward to Madonna’s new album “Hard Candy”. Unfortunately I will be traveling so I will have to wait until I return to download it onto my itunes. In a totally stalkery way I have been listening to 30 second clips of each song on the album on Youtube. In case you were doubting it, I am in fact a total loser. To remind you, If you are in Toronto, Miami or Boston in the next week and a half…please do come out and see me and my film “Eleven Minutes”.  I promise you will enjoy it. Everyone else I know has, at least that’s what they tell me. They could totally be lying to me. Whatever. I like it and that’s all that matters. Me and the woman from the Toronto Star. Go to  HYPERLINK “http://www.jaymccarrolldocumentary.com” www.jaymccarrolldocumentary.com for more details, dates and times etc. Ok. I have gardening to do, so I’m peacing out.  Happy 4-20! Have a bitchin’ day!

hi jay, glad you are enjoying springtime in philly and enjoy your premieres next week…you’re a star! :)

on your comments on poverty, i also read recently that even as the US economy worsens the “super-rich” are getting even richer. this is the extreme end of wealth, people who make 8-9 figure incomes a year. so for addressing the disgusting income gap, i have a question: if we have a minimum wage, can we have a maximum wage too? i mean come on… there has to be a $ amount where rich people DON’T NEED more money. it would help redistribute wealth so that our economy is more just, it might influence the super-wealthy (including politicians?) from letting their decisions be completely governed by greed, and it would lead to less stratification between the rich and poor. i think a big problem is that we conceptualize poor people and poverty as being “the problem” rather than addressing extreme wealth as an equal problem. so a maximum wage i propose, as a small part of a solution. what do you think?? xoxoo

Jay, so glad you are loving the Philly springtime. This has been an especially glorious one and the trees are stunningly beautiful.

Personally I don’t like Nadia’s idea. Most of the wealthy people that I know do in fact donate a large portion of their income to charity. They do that and they also work on fundraisers that encourage their friends to donate money and raise awareness for causes that they believe in. I believe that there will be cures found for cancer and AIDS during our lifetimes but without charitable contributions, research dollars would need to come from taxes or increased healthcare costs.

Jay, I agree that people that spend $500,000 on parties for their kids have misplaced values. People that spend that on a wedding (for a marriage that has a 50/50 chance of surviving) are also whack. It’s time that people think a little less of themselves and a little more about giving to others.

LOVED Eleven Minutes and seeing it with its first audience. One suggestion – do try to participate in a Q&A after the film screening. People usually ask thoughtful/provocative questions!

    xoxo

    Hallo Jay,
I just wish to say few words, and hope you will feel good about that. :) I was watching few episodes of runway, I wanted to see all, but our (Serbian) stupid tv house canceled it. It was going late at night between friday and saturday, and I was waiting awake all month to catch new episodes, because tv station still had jingle for show. Then I was mad, they were lying… I’m not watching tv regularly, I hate tv… So I found Runway web site, and I was so happy to see that you won. Your design is great, and your victory was for me victory of punk goth styles. You made them to look elegant. I like you because you are not some fancy guy, you are not spoiled, and I like you because you are creative, honest, always yourself. I hope you will always stay yourself. Stupid with fashion is that it is so connected from one part to creativity and imagination, and from other side to consumerism, money and power. For me fashion is not just about look. I never like to follow some trends… I would like if I can make trends xexexe I made influence once, I was wearing colorful staples attached on my clothes and shoelaces. And it become popular among punk youth in my town.
I like your bags and shirts, you are making fashion for everyone. But I know you will make some expensive clothes too, but I will forgive you that. :) Sell them well, and become rich.
Few words, I say. I was lying :D
    Enjoy spring

    Respect

    Hey Jay,

Hi from Scotland. You’re still my favourite runway dude over the past four years of the show (plus about three years I think for the UK version – project catwalk). I’m a huge movie fan so will try to check out your film and see what you’ve been up to.

If you ever need some crash space in Scotland, then feel free to drop me an email. :) Love & hugs, G.

    Jayyyyy!

Another great post! Glad you’re enjoying springtime in Philadelphia. It really can be quite joyous and bucolic when the weather cooperates. But, honey, come summer…it’s an entirely different & altogether sweaty scene (come on over to my place if you need AC…lol).

    Hugs ‘n kisses 4ever!

    Hi Jay –

I was entirely thrilled to meet you, Michael and Rob at your South Beach film fest screening and fashion show last night. I wanted to forward you my post from the ELEVEN MINUTES site. We wish you luck in the judging and hope the press about the movie brings you BIG ASS financial backing for your line. Here is the post with lots of love and xxx from Miami Beach:

BF & I saw the film at the South Beach GLBT Film Fest last night and had a wonderful time meeting Jay and the directors Michael Selditch & Rob Tate. The 4:30 screening was followed by a brief Q & A at which Jay discussed his upcoming July TV gig selling his products on QVC. I for one can’t wait to see Jay pimping on the QVC!

This feature film is not an extended reality television spin-off, it is a carefully-worked, commercially viable documentary with remarkable cinematography, deft editing and breathtaking pacing. Movie buffs and fashion fans were cheering Jay along from beginning to end. It’s not TV – it’s a really entertaining movie!

    The deets –

The film is as beautifully composed and thoughtfully crafted as Jay’s clothing line. It’s daunting to see just how much work, how many hands, and how many PERSONALITIES tangle in the development of a fashion show. Working in the fashion industry, I was cheering for Jay all the way. His natural wit carries the film from beginning to end.

After the screening, guests headed up to the rooftop pool deck of a South Beach hotel to drink and socialize with the directors and then see the movie fashions worn by local (and decidedly less fabulous) models on an improvised catwalk. The transition from film to real life was absolutely a treat and the clothes looked great. In the film, Jay shares the spotlight with his next-door neighbor Lola Brooks who designs the jewelry and accessories for the Bryant Park show. Having an opportunity to see her work up close made the night even better. She’s a real artist and a worthy counterpart to Jay’s unique craftsmanship.

At the after party, the directors shared news of their upcoming project for the Sundance Channel, “Architecture School” set in New Orleans. I’m sure it will be as interesting as their creative construction of Eleven Minutes which zooms from the Micro to the Macro, including beautifully composed shots of Manhattan, detailed filming of the sewing machines, up-close looks at the tailoring of the shoes and wire bracelets, labor-intensive stuffing of the show invite envelopes, and a million off-kilter images of the many moods of Jay. Their Jay McCarroll-inspired patchwork composition made the final product a joy to watch.

Having observed Jay’s evolution from the quirky reality TV guy to the struggling designer on Project Jay to the movie star (!) in Eleven Minutes, I feel validated in my admitted hero worship of this young and talented designer. Jay handles the pressures of his fame with elan and humility. His ability to maintain artistic integrity and at the same time target what will be the commercially viable strong points in his fashion collections will serve him well in his career. When we saw the signature buttons and giant headphones on the first (Project) runway and then the hot air balloon graphics and embroidered concentric circles on the line last night, we knew at once that Jay added his unique and memorable touches to his designs once again…

Bravo Jay… Bravo! Good luck on the Q! We’ll definitely be calling in our orders.

    xxx
